Art Nouveau pin in gold-plated metal depicting a flower in a round frame, centered with a garnet-glass doublet set in a bezel setting.
This red composite stone was created in the 19th century to imitate ruby: a thin layer of garnet was glued onto molten glass, then the whole thing was cut so that the glass used in the pavilion gave the stone its color. If the pavilion were blue, the entire stone would appear blue, even the top.
This choice was made because the garnet in the upper part has a better resistance to abrasion and therefore better durability, and gave the stone a better shine, similar to that of ruby or sapphire.
